ASUU at Imo State University declares indefinite strike in protest of long-standing unresolved issues .

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Imo State University (IMSU) has declared an indefinite strike in protest of long-standing unresolved issues regarding unpaid allowances and salary discrepancies.

In a statement signed by the ASUU-IMSU Chairperson, Odinakachukwu Ejiogu, and Secretary, Lazarus Chikwendu, the union expressed frustration over the neglect of staff welfare.

The statement highlighted that the decision to strike was driven by a series of grievances, including the non-payment of academic earned allowances dating back to 2009, salary disparities between IMSU staff and those in other tertiary institutions, delayed promotions, and non-remittance of pension deductions since 2016.

The union further criticized selective salary payments and the denial of financial benefits for staff promotions, noting that the issues have persisted despite numerous efforts to engage the university administration, governing council, and the visitor to the university through letters, meetings, and peaceful rallies.

ASUU revealed that a 21-day ultimatum had been issued on July 18, 2024, in the hopes that university management would resolve these pressing issues, but however, the lack of any tangible resolution has forced the union to resort to the indefinite strike.

While acknowledging the impact of the strike on academic activities, ASUU called for public understanding and support, stating that the action is aimed at securing justice and better working conditions for IMSU academic staff.
